On Tuesday, September 27th, before the Washington Nationals took on the Diamondbacks, Everybody Wins! DC (EW!DC) Executive Director, Mary Salander, stepped onto the field to accept a Delta Dream Grant from the Nationals Dream Foundation and Delta Airlines. The Delta Dream Grant for $15,000 will go to support the EW!DC Power Lunch program in 11 low-income elementary schools around the DC Metro Area.
The Power Lunch program links eager young minds with adult professionals who give an hour of their time each week to read and talk with children over the lunch hour. The goal of the Power Lunch program is to reach young children and help transform their lives through reading, by providing them with caring Reading Mentors who read one-on-one with them each week over the school year. Over the past twenty-one years, thousands of Reading Mentors from Capitol Hill, government agencies, corporations, local businesses, and other organizations have made this vision a reality. The mentors promote reading for pleasure, serve as caring adult role models, build self-confidence and enhance self-esteem.
The Nationals have been supporting EW!DC for many years, sending volunteer Reading Mentors to work with students at Amidon-Bowen Elementary School, as well as providing mascots for EW!DC’s annual gala celebration. EW!DC is honored to expand and deepen this partnership and is so grateful to both the Nationals and Delta for this generous grant.
